Attribute-based sales prices for product configuration models

The constraint-based product configuration model in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management allows you to configure products using rules and constraints. In this session, attribute-based sales pricing in the product configuration model is explained in more detail.

For each product configuration model, multiple sales price models can be created for sales pricing. The sales price models are based on the components and attributes, rather than the physical bill of materials and routings.

Initially, the default currency is defined under Product Information Management > Setup > Product Information Management Parameters.

In the parameters it is also possible to select whether to attach a Microsoft Excel file with a price breakdown for all sales order lines or sales quotation lines.

Subsequently, you can now start to create a sales price model. Under Product information management > Products > Product configuration models, select the appropriate product configuration model.

The following example shows the creation of a sales price model for the “Speaker solution” product configuration model.

After opening the Price models form, a new model can be created, or selected.

Edit in the action area takes you to the edit page for the selected pricing model.

The editing page provides the following functions:

  • The default currency is displayed in the header and new currencies can be added for price setup.
  • The Left pane shows all components and user requirements of the product model. Each node in the product model tree can have one base price expression and an optional number of expression rules. An expression rule consists of a condition and an expression. Each expression rule covers a product option that can be used to control the price of the product.
  • When creating conditions and expressions, the same operators are available as for calculations in a product model. The expression editor supports both expressions and conditions.

The next step is now to select the node in the left column for which price rules are to be set. The next figure shows the selected node “High end speaker” with a base price expression of $1,299.95. This can be modified by one or more expression rules depending on the configuration selected. In this example, they are as follows:

  • For a white case end, $79.95 is subtracted
  • For a corner protector, add $59.95
  • For the metal front grill, add $109.95
  • For the Rosewood finish, add $159.95
  • For each unit of speaker height, add $15.95

When selling a configurable product, the system checks if the currency is the same as the customer’s currency. If it is not, the system uses the set exchange rates to convert the value of the default currency to the customer’s currency.

To add explicit prices in an additional currency, a “Current currency” is selected on the editing page of the price models. In this example, the default currency is USD and EUR is selected as the Current Currency.

After selecting the new currency, the table, in the Expression Rules tab, now includes two expression fields.

  • Expression – Displays the expression (or constant value) to calculate the price using the currency currently selected for Current Currency.
  • Default Expression – Displays the expression (or constant value) for finding the price using the default currency.

After all expression rules have been set, the pricing model can be tested. Via Test in the action area, the Test product model dialog opens.

By selecting the product options, you can see how they affect the displayed value for price and shipping date.

To download an Excel document containing all the details of the price calculation, select View Price Breakdown.

The downloaded table shows both the absolute value and the contribution in percent for each active price element. If the setting for “Attach” has been activated in the parameters, this Excel table will be automatically attached to an order or quotation.

Once all pricing models have been set up, at least one selection criterion must then be defined for the product configuration model.
The product configuration model is selected under Product information management > Products > Product configuration model. The criteria are then created or edited in the action area under Setup > Price model criteria.

To define an existing criterion, the query designer can be opened under Edit in the action area. This is used to define the conditions under which the pricing model should be applied.

Once all the criteria have been set up, they still need to be arranged in the correct order. Using “Up” or “Down” in the action area, the selected position can be moved accordingly. The system always starts searching at the beginning of the list within a configuration. Therefore, defining the order is very important.

The last step is to specify attribute-based sales prices for the product model version. Under Product Information Management > Products > Product Configuration Models, select the appropriate product configuration model and click on Model > Product Model Details > Versions in the activity area. In the Versions form, the pricing method is now set to Attribute-based.
